Yvonne Morley, Vocal Coach, ran a 3 day accent Workshop in London.
A remarkable three day course, full of fun, by the inimitable Yvonne Morley, exploring all things accent.
Day 1 The day began with a request for us to bring a pen, notepad and mirror – facial articulation and body language were the order of the day. We gathered to find out how to interpret and use accents in our voice work.Yvonne discussed the history of various accents with some wonderful cultural references and introduced us to rhoticity; clear, dark and syllabic Ls; and voiced and unvoiced sounds. We discussed Chaucer, the importance of embodying your words and (my personal favourite) the sound of hesitation.
Day 2 RP (received pronunciation) day started with an anatomy class, discussing the intricacies of the skull, its structure and purpose. We discussed the international phonetic alphabet (IPA), were introduced to Arthur the Rat and talked about the importance of vowels.
Day 3 Standard American; this was about submitting to the accent; the physicality and musicality of voice; how the accent is sustained, strong and direct. We discussed culture and how Americans don’t have to repeat themselves! We were introduced to Laban effort and the zones!
Yvonne masterfully provided us with a solid understanding of the voice, the beauty of language and their true potential
