MOOC

Massive Online Open Courses

Why, haven’t you heard?

There are courses from universities around the world, for free, on-line. All you have to do is sign up and learn!

I know, I couldn’t believe it either!

In January I undertook two six-week courses to enhance my abilities

EdX – Vocal Recording Technology

Coursera – Introductiuon to Music Production

Both gave an introduction to the terminology used by Sound Engineers which has proved very helpful regarding information on the basics of Sound Production. Both have proved invaluable in my work. The two courses varied quite a lot. The first was conversational, using other students to bounce ideas off and sample led. The second was well pitched and ran much more into the technology side, explaining details of sound Signal Flow etc. During the six weeks I was required to watch videos which are released on a Monday morning and have “homework” attached due in on the following Thursday. You mark 5 other people’s answers and they mark yours. You are then given an average mark and move on to the next section.

Their is an honour code, which says that the work you present is your own (they are big on stopping plagiarism) and you are only undermining yourself if you don’t put in the time.

The opportunities are limitless and the availability of this information and expertise should not be passed up.
