I recently moved house, to relatively temporary accommodation, and needed to set up my home studio in a rented space. A good friend, whose opinion I value, suggested plumbing pipe! I laughed, then asked it to be said again so I could write it down. Here’s what happened.
I made a plan on paper, had a chat with a plumber, bought the articles required and created a frame of plumbing pipe and connectors – the man at Wickes thinks I’m fabulous and it was the most fun I’ve had since I was a small child, forbidden from playing with my brother’s lego set.
Having chosen the best spot in the house, I made sure to measure twice and cut once, slotted and glued to my heart’s content. There is something very therapeutic about working with your hands, when you work day-in day-out with your mind.
The structure is solid and strong. On the outside I hung duvets, on supermarket special, with cable ties. On the inside the Auralex foam that had been hanging in my previous studio.
The result is an amazingly stable, dry sound with a great noise floor and I’m actually really proud of it. There were a couple of times when I would have appreciated an extra pair of hands but necessity is the mother of invention and you’d be surprised how far you can reach before falling off a stool. Suffice to acknowledge that my arms are longer than I thought! I am glad to say that I have risen in my own estimation and I am thrilled to know that I was able to satisfy my own, professional needs at a minimal cost.
Within a couple of days I was working out of my studio and grateful for good friends. I still long for a Studio Bricks PlusOne booth but now I can work, I can start saving 🙂
